A Suitable Boy is set in the early 1950s, shortly after India’s independence. The story mainly follows Lata Mehra, a young university student, and her mother Mrs. Rupa Mehra, who is determined to find a suitable husband for her daughter.
At the same time, the novel follows several interconnected families in different parts of India, including politicians, landlords, businessmen, and ordinary citizens. Through these characters, Vikram Seth paints a detailed picture of a society undergoing major change.
Lata is caught between love and family expectations as she meets three very different suitors. Her journey of choosing a partner reflects broader themes of independence, duty, and personal freedom.
The novel also includes political storylines, especially around elections, land reforms, and religious tensions, showing how national events affect personal lives.
