The God of Small Things is set in Ayemenem, Kerala, and tells the story of fraternal twins Estha and Rahel. The narrative shifts between their childhood in the 1960s and their reunion as adults.
At its center is a forbidden relationship between Ammu, the twins’ mother, and Velutha, a man from an “untouchable” caste. Their love breaks strict social rules and leads to devastating consequences that change the lives of everyone in the family.
The novel is not told in a straight line. Instead, it moves back and forth in time, slowly revealing how a single moment of defiance leads to lifelong trauma. Through this structure, Arundhati Roy shows how “small things”—like small decisions, small acts of love, and small injustices—can shape entire lives.
