Family Matters focuses on Nariman Vakeel, an elderly Parsi widower living in Mumbai. He suffers from Parkinson’s disease and becomes increasingly dependent on his family for care.
Nariman’s stepchildren, Coomy and Jal, struggle with resentment, responsibility, and emotional burden. Eventually, Nariman is moved between households—especially to the home of his daughter Roxana and her family—where care becomes both an act of love and a source of financial and emotional strain.
As the story unfolds, the novel explores how illness affects not just the patient, but the entire family system. Everyday decisions—like who provides care, who sacrifices comfort, and who feels neglected—become emotionally charged and morally complex.
