The White Tiger is narrated by Balram Halwai, who writes a series of letters describing his journey from a poor village in Bihar to becoming a wealthy businessman in Bengaluru.

Born into a poor family, Balram is forced to leave school and work to support his family. He later becomes a driver for a rich landlord’s son, Ashok, and is exposed to the vast gap between India’s wealthy elite and its poor working class.

As Balram observes corruption, inequality, and exploitation, he becomes determined to escape what he calls the “Rooster Coop”—a metaphor for the social system that keeps poor people trapped in poverty and obedience. Believing that success requires breaking social rules, he makes a life-changing and morally controversial decision that allows him to gain freedom and start his own business.

The novel explores the rapid economic changes in India, showing both the opportunities created by modernization and the persistence of deep social inequalities.
