Godaan focuses on Hori, a hardworking but impoverished farmer living in rural India. His deepest desire is to own a cow (“godaan” means donation of a cow, a highly sacred act in Hindu tradition). For Hori, a cow represents respect, stability, and fulfillment of religious duty.
However, Hori’s life is filled with constant financial struggles. He is burdened by debt, exploited by moneylenders, and trapped in a rigid social system. Even simple dreams become difficult to achieve because of poverty and social injustice.
Hori’s family life is also complicated, with tensions between tradition and changing values. His children struggle with their own ambitions and frustrations, showing the generational shift happening in rural India.
As the story progresses, Hori continues to sacrifice everything for others, trying to maintain honor and fulfill social expectations, even when it harms him personally. In the end, despite all his efforts, he remains poor and exhausted, highlighting the harsh realities of rural life.
