A Fine Balance is set mainly during the 1975 Emergency period in India, a time of political unrest, censorship, and forced social change.
The story revolves around four main characters:
- Dina Dalal, a widowed Parsi woman trying to maintain her independence
- Ishvar and Omprakash, tailors from a rural background who come to the city seeking work
- Maneck Kohlah, a student from the mountains who comes to the city for education
Their lives gradually connect as they share space, work, and emotional struggles in a crowded urban environment.
Story Overview
Dina rents part of her apartment to Ishvar and Om, who help her with tailoring work. Maneck becomes a paying guest and forms a close bond with them. Despite their different backgrounds, they develop a fragile sense of family and support.
However, the harsh realities of society—including poverty, caste violence, political oppression, and corruption—begin to tear their lives apart. Each character faces personal tragedy, and their dreams of stability slowly collapse under external pressure.
