The Guide is one of the most celebrated novels in Indian English literature. Written by R. K. Narayan, the story is set in the fictional South Indian town of Malgudi and follows the remarkable life of its protagonist, Raju.
Raju begins as a railway shopkeeper’s son who becomes a popular tourist guide, earning the nickname “Railway Raju.” His life changes dramatically when he meets Rosie, a talented classical dancer trapped in an unhappy marriage with an archaeologist named Marco. Raju encourages Rosie’s dancing career, but his greed, possessiveness, and dishonesty eventually lead to his imprisonment.
After his release from prison, Raju settles near an abandoned temple, where villagers mistakenly believe he is a holy man. Although he initially accepts the role out of convenience, he gradually undergoes a profound inner transformation. When a severe drought strikes the village, Raju undertakes a difficult fast for the welfare of the people, forcing him to confront his past and discover the true meaning of sacrifice and faith. The novel ends with an ambiguous yet powerful conclusion that leaves readers reflecting on redemption, spirituality, and human nature.
